چکیده

H ere we describe a woman with relapsing neuromyelitis optica (NMO) who was seropositive for NMO-IgG and who experienced a relapse of myelitis 4 months after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) for a lymphoma that developed while receiving azathioprine therapy. Analysis of serum samples obtained at key points in her disease course using 3 different serological techniques (immunofluorescence, immunoprecipitation assay, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) documented marked increase in titer coinciding with the relapse.

Lack of response to monoclonal antibody therapy in neuromyelitis optica.

T he article by Matiello et al 1 regarding a relapse of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation highlights the need to further understand the role of the immune system in this disease. Immunosuppressive therapeutics targeting B and T cells are used to prevent disabling relapses in NMO. Rituximab is a monoclonal antiCD20 antibody that is reported to be...

Association between CRP Level on Admission Day and Length of Hospitalization and Engraftment in Patients Undergoing Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Background and purpose: Several studies investigated the role of C-reactive protein (CRP) during transplantation and inflammation, and clinical outcomes after stem cell transplantation. In this study, we examined the relationship between the earliest CRP level on admission day, and the first outcome after transplantation, myeloid and platelet engraftment, and the length of hospitalization in p...

Oral Ciprofloxacin Prophylaxis in Patients Undergoing High Dose Therapy and Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Background: Antibiotic prophylaxis is usually used in allogenic stem cell transplantation, but its use in Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT) is controversial. We evaluated the efficacy of ciprofloxacin prophylaxis in ASCT. Materials and Methods: To identify the efficacy of ciprofloxacin on the incidence of neutropenic fever and its complications, 72 patients had been admitted to Talegh...

Relation between Age, Gender, Number of Blood Products Received and Diagnosis with Engraftment and Length of Hospital Stay in Patients Undergoing Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation

Background and purpose: Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation may be one of the best treatment options for some patients with hematological malignancies. The process of stem cell homing in the bone marrow and the production and proliferation of denovo cell populations is called engraftment and could be considered as one of the key factors in the success of stem cell transplantation...
